Dream Balm

lesley graham

I'm sure we could all use a few more dreams, right?! Here's a recipe for a Dream Balm using some of our kit oils + a few others. This blend uses essential oils that are both relaxing but also wonderful for peaceful dreams and creative visualization. You can also use for any head/neck tension or as a hand, foot, nail and lip balm!

Dream Balm

You will need:

+ 5 T coconut oil
+ 1 T beeswax
+ 1 T cocoa butter
+ 20 drops Orange oil
+ 20 drops Tangerine oil
+ 15 drops Geranium oil
+ 15 drops Lavender oil
+ 10 drops Bergamot oil
+ 4 drops Rose oil (optional)

Combine all oils minus the essential oils over low heat in a double broiler until liquid. Stir and allow to cool and then add the essential oils. Pour into a glass jar and lightly cover with a paper towel until hardened (about 15 min). Use within 6 months. Citrus scents evaporate quickly so use sooner for best results.

Apply under your nose, on the throat, temples, chest, back or on the soles of your feet. Inhale deeply.

Would also make an amazing diffuser blend! Just sayin'!

DIY Bottom Balm

DIY Bottom Balm

This is a favorite for little bottoms or any skin that needs some soothing! A great substitution for Tender Tush if it is ever out of stock.

You will need:

Melt beeswax in a double boiler (or a glass bowl set over a pot of simmering water). Once melted, add the coconut oil and the shea butter and allow all to melt completely. Once melted, remove from stove and allow to cool a bit until no longer translucent. Add in the essential oils and whip it all up with a hand mixer until nice and fluffy. Transfer to a 4-ounce glass jar.

DIY Outdoor Spray

ashley cribb

With warmer weather (and summer vacations!) right around the corner, we are prepping for safe fun in the sun! One of our favorite oily DIYs is an Outdoor Spray. Chemical free, effective and smells great? Sign us up!

To make your Outdoor Spray, grab a 4oz glass spray bottle and add:
4T alcohol-free Witch Hazel
30 total drops essential oils (more oils = stronger spray)
 - 10 drops Citronella
 - 10 drops Geranium
 - 5 drops Lavender
 - 5 drops Purification
Optional: additional 5 drops Eucalyptus + 5 drops Peppermint
Fill with V-6 or fractionated coconut oil

Spray generously onto skin and rub in slightly to enjoy the outdoors annoyance-free! If you need a stronger spray, add more essential oils, up to a total of 50 drops!

You can also also add a few drops of citronella and/or purification to patio umbrellas, hammock and hammock swing, outdoor pillows, shoes and other absorptive materials around the outdoor spaces to stay annoyance-free!

Warm some coconut oil over the stove until just melted.

Let cool slightly, then add the V6 and essential oils (Lavender + Cedarwood are amazing for this).

Apply evenly through hair and leave on for 15-30 minutes before washing hair thoroughly.

Travel Faves Beyond the Kit!

lesley graham

Once you start using oils and seeing the benefits, you won't be caught traveling without them! Here are a few of our must-have travel favorites outside of the kit (see how to travel with your kit here).

First, a cute pouch! We love this one but also love Modern Makerie and you can always find cute pouches on Etsy.

Keep hands + surfaces clean! Travel = germs. Ew. We cannot imagine life without Thieves spray (door handles, hands, cell phones, etc) and the hand purifier. They smell amazing and are safe for little ones. We also love to travel with Thieves Cough Drops.

Not the DIY type? We adore Young Living's roll ons! First of all... PRETTY, second these are powerful and AMAZING blends: Tranquil for getting some good rest while traveling (or just zenning out), Deep Relief for rolling on after a long day of sight seeing and Breathe Again... for obvious reasons!

The Orb diffuser doesn't spill and it's small and fits in a cup holder. We love it for long car rides and for tucking it in our overnight bag. It's also great for kid rooms!

Other blends we love to have on hand: Peace and Calming, Release (fear of flying anyone?!) and Aroma Siez (great for unwinding - smells amazing).

Need energy on the go? We love Ningxia Red for immune support and antioxidants, Nitro for natural energy, the BEST granola EVER and Master Formal for everything you need in handy travel packets.

Travel with your Kit!

lesley graham

New to oils? Here are some ways to travel with your kit. Let's get started.

Can I fly with my oils? 100% YES! We like to carry them on to apply during the flight (ahhh!) and make sure your tops are screwed on tight. Flying internationally? Place them in a clear ziplock bag.

Make sure to pack your diffuser (we also LOVE the Orb diffuser for travel - spill-proof and doesn't take up much room)! Here are some of our favorite starter kit blends.

In a glass water bottle (how cute is this one?!) stay hydrated and refreshed with a drop of Lemon or Peppermint. Something not sitting right? Add a drop of Digize to Peppermint (more about these oils here).

Make a Thieves roller for immune boosting super powers! Use consistently on the bottoms of your feet before travel and all during. If you start to feel yucky roll down the spine as well.

Thieves Roller

Fill roller ball 1/4 of the way with Thieves oil and then top with carrier oil! More rollers with your kit here. We recommend the Head On roller for flights and Tummy Calmer to have on hand! The Breathe Easy is also a favorite.

Make an after-sun spray with Lavender, Peppermint and Copaiba.

You will need:

+ ½ cup witch hazel or water
+ 2 Tablespoons pure aloe vera gel
+ 10 drops pure Lavender
+ 10 drops pure Peppermint
+ 5 drops Copaiba
+ 4 oz (or larger) spray bottle

Combine all ingredients and shake! Spray on for instant cooling and healing.

Motion Sickness? We love to diffuse Peppermint in the car, you can also place a few drops on a clothes pin and clip it to the vents!

Unicorn Roller

ashley cribb

Think of this as the mother of all emotional rollers... calming, supporting, uplifting... ALL IN ONE. This powerhouse combination from our sweet friend Casey Wiegand contains so many of our favorite for all the feels!

Amazing emotional support, smells so dreamy and makes a great perfume! Apply frequently and liberally ;) We love rolling this blend onto the wrists, along the neck and onto the chest.

Oils are the perfect way to support all the feels because our brains are naturally wired to connect smell with emotions and memories. Breathe in deeply and repeat some positive statements such as "I am enough" or "My way is clear" or "I honor myself."

Plus you'll have people telling you 'Girl, you smell good!' Other great combinations for mood here

Essential Oils by Mood

lesley graham

Think of this as the mood ring of diffusing ;). You can also wear these topically.

Essential oils work with the limbic system of the brain, also known as the "smell brain."

There are over 50,000,000 receptor neurons located in the limbic system which send a message to the olfactory bulb. These neurons were created to react to the smells and then send a message which is produced after the scent is detected and then it is used to communicate with areas of the brain that deal with our emotions, basic thought processes and behaviors.

Our sense of smell can even trigger childhood memories which shows us the power of our senses and how they can be used for our overall well being.

What are HOT oils?!

lesley graham

Hot oils are essential oils that are warming to the skin and should always be used with a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation. Some examples of hot oils are: Thieves, Cinnamon Bark, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme and for some people, Peppermint.

What happens if I forget and then experience an uncomfortable warming? What if my little ones accidentally touch them? What if they get in my eyes? The answer is always to apply a carrier oil immediately. Oil + water do not mix so if you apply a carrier oil to the area it will immediately provide relief. :)

Some of our favorite carrier oils: Young Living's V6, coconut oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil.

Lemongrass for Skin

lesley graham

Lemongrass is an incredible oil. It is mood boosting, great for sore muscles (it's a hot oil so make sure to use a carrier oil like Young Living's V6 or coconut oil), also wonderful for diffusing for respiratory support. Lemongrass is an amazing oil for your immune system and also for supporting lactation or making your own deodorant!

From Eat Beautiful:

Lemongrass for troubled skin

  • 5-10 drops Lemongrass essential oil
  • 1 cup carrier oil

Combine ingredients and stir or shake (we recommend using a pump bottle like this for easy application) and use as a skin cleanser for troubled skin.

Diffuse with:
