Summer Siesta

We truly love a summer siesta. Anyone else? There’s something about laying down on crisp cool sheets after spending time in the sunshine☀️

For a magical 20-30 minutes of rest, set the mood: Roll on some essential oils, spritz your sheets with a dreamy linen spray, turn on white noise (they have some amazing apps out there!) and darken the room just a little bit. If you’ve got your diffuser you can turn that on too!

Did you know that a 20-30 minute nap can improve your mood, alertness and overall performance without leaving you groggy?

Ashley Cribb shared some favorite oils and blends for sleep.

🌿 OILS + BLENDS
Lavender, Cedarwood, Vetiver, Northern Lights Black Spruce, Valerian, Peace and Calming, SleepyIze, Frankincense, Copaiba, Dream Catcher, Orange, Tranquil Roller.

🤔 Why are there so many options?
Just like trying a few conventional therapies to find one that may work for you, oil are the same! One combo might be ideal for us, while another is great for you.

🌿 ROLLER BLENDS: All recipes are for a 10mL roller. Fill with carrier + Apply to bottom of the feet, spine before napping and bedtime.

😴 All is Calm:
10 drops Peace and Calming, Patchouli, Orange
😴 Sleepyhead:
10 drops SleepyIze or Lavender, Frankincense, Copaiba
😴 Gentle Baby: (great for the littlest oilers)
5 drops each Lavender, Frankincense, Gentle Baby
😴 Zen Situation
10 drops each Lavender, Vetiver, Black spruce
😴 All the Zzz's
15 drops each Lavender, Cedarwood, Vetiver
😴 Lights out
10 drops each Lavender, Vetiver
5 drops Valerian, Roman Chamomile
😴 Dream a Little Dream
15 drops Dream Catcher
10 drops each Lavender, Orange

This is our favorite linen spray for sleep!
We love how quick and easy it easy to make this. Literally takes just a few minutes.

Add to a 4 ounce glass spray bottle:
+ 1 tbsp witch hazel
+ 15 drops lavender
+ 15 drops cedar wood
+ 10 drops gentle baby
+ top with filtered or distilled water
Adjust to your preference, spritz and enjoy!

Enjoy those naps! Sometimes it’s just what our bodies need!

Summer Makeup + SPF

When it comes to the delicate skin on our face, we want to be sure we're protected, especially in the summer sun! Young Living's sunscreen works great as a base underneath your Savvy Minerals by Young Living® makeup to offer the SPF boost you need. Here are some tips:

  • Wash and prime your face first. Use one of the Savvy primers or ART renewal serum to give your face a fresh finish.

  • Apply the SPF 50 mineral sunscreen all over face and rub in gently but completely. You may find it helpful to lightly set the sunscreen with a dusting of Matte Veil or Diamond Dust before applying the rest of your makeup.

  • Apply the rest of your Savvy Minerals as usual! Or, skip the full face look and tint your sunscreen with your Savvy foundation. Quick and easy for summer days!

  • And the YL sunscreen is THE BEST for your skin! Team YL knew that blocking UV rays was the right path, so a zinc oxide sunscreen—a barrier approach—was the right formulation. But Young Living’s scientists, bound by the Seed to Seal® commitment to create the absolute best products available, developed a sunscreen that uses non-nano zinc oxide, which means when you wear this sunscreen, you won’t absorb the chemicals into your bloodstream, however benign they may be!!! Plus the SPF 50 contains Helichrysum, Lavender, Myrrh, Carrot Seed, and Frankincense.

Prep for the Fourth

This beloved holiday is right around the corner and we wanted to give you some of our favorite oily tips!

  • Beat the heat with this icy peppermint roll-on! Peppermint is incredibly refreshing and cooling so perfect for a hot day. Take an empty 15 ml essential oil bottle, fill it halfway with Peppermint oil and fill the rest with V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex. Pop an AromaGlide Roller Fitament on top to make this easy to apply wherever you go!

  • Frozen towels with Eucalyptus: Whether you’re watching a parade or walking around town, protect yourself from getting overheated with an ice-cold towel. Add 5-8 total drops of eucalyptus to a damp washcloth or hand towel. Pop it in the freezer for 15 minutes, then wear it around your neck.

  • Protect yourself from the elements:
Grab some insect repellent wipes or fill up an empty roller bottle with YL’s insect repellent to have some on the go! And don’t forget about to grab some sunscreen!

  • 4-legged family members:
If you have a dog who gets nervous with fireworks, preparing them early with calming oils has always helped our dog SO much! Add several drops of valor and peace & calming to your hands. Dilute with V-6 and rub on the tips of your pups ears, in between the pads of their paws and under the paws. I like to pet them with the remaining and then set up the diffuser with the same blend before heading out the door.

    Happy 4th of July!

Dogs + Fireworks

lesley graham

Dogs_+_Fireworks.jpg

Did you know that Fourth of July is when the most dogs run away from home? :( They get scared from the fireworks and panic! Here are a few tips for using oils with animals as well as some of our go-tos!

Animals respond to essential oils in the same way humans do, but they can be a little more sensitive to the effects of them. With humans, we always say that the feet are the safest location but for animals, working through the fur or hair is the best way to begin. Oils should always be diluted when applying to animals and please be overly cautious when using "hot" oils such as Oregano, Thyme, Clove, Mountain Savory or Cinnamon.

HERE ARE SOME GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING OILS TO ANIMALS:

+For small animals (cats, small dogs and exotics): Apply 3-5 drops of diluted (80-90%) oil mixture per application.
+For larger animals (large dogs, goats and pigs): Apply 3-5 drops neat (dilute if using hot oils) per application
+For large animals (cattle or horses): Apply 10-15 drops neat (dilute if using hot oils) per application.

SOME GREAT OILS TO USE WITH DOGS!

+Apply diluted Frankincense daily to their spine
+Animal Scents Ointment with Melrose on sores
+Apply Peace and Calming and Lavender or T-Away around their ears when they are scared (earthquakes, thunder, fireworks, or vet visits) - from Kristina Carter

What to Pack For the Fourth of July

lesley graham

Fourth_of_July.jpg

As you are packing up your coolers and sparklers... don't forget your oils! Here are just a few of the ways to use our Everyday Oils on the go, if you don't have roller balls yet just pack a little ball jar of coconut oil to use as a carrier oil (helps the oils to spread quicker and easier!) or a Lavender lip balm - makes a great carrier stick on the go!

What to pack:

  • An oil pouch or makeup bag for easing toting

  • Lavender in a roller ball or straight from you kit! We use lavender for bumps along the way or after too much sun. Accidentally get too close to a sparkler? Yup, Lavender! Great for bug bites too!

  • Digize for post ALL the chips and dips and fried chicken. Drop a drop in a glass water bottle and thank us later. You can also do a drop under the tongue.

  • Peppermint in a roller ball. Use this magical oil to cool down, for after too many wine spritzers, etc. Works wonders rubbed on the temples, make sure not to get near eyes, if you do just put some coconut oil on your eyes to draw it out.

  • Stress Away, Peace and Calming, and Valor for all the crowds. Roll on liberally!

  • Outside your kit: Purification!!! You can bring your diffuser outside for a natural way to keep pests at bay, this one is also great on bug bites or stings. Did you get Citronella last month? That's a great one too!

  • Other favorites: YL's Bug Repellent Wipes and Mineral Sunscreen!

    SHOP THEM ALL HERE!

Dream Balm

lesley graham

I'm sure we could all use a few more dreams, right?! Here's a recipe for a Dream Balm using some of our kit oils + a few others. This blend uses essential oils that are both relaxing but also wonderful for peaceful dreams and creative visualization. You can also use for any head/neck tension or as a hand, foot, nail and lip balm!

Dream Balm

You will need:

+ 5 T coconut oil
+ 1 T beeswax
+ 1 T cocoa butter
+ 20 drops Orange oil
+ 20 drops Tangerine oil
+ 15 drops Geranium oil
+ 15 drops Lavender oil
+ 10 drops Bergamot oil
+ 4 drops Rose oil (optional)

Combine all oils minus the essential oils over low heat in a double broiler until liquid. Stir and allow to cool and then add the essential oils. Pour into a glass jar and lightly cover with a paper towel until hardened (about 15 min). Use within 6 months. Citrus scents evaporate quickly so use sooner for best results.

Apply under your nose, on the throat, temples, chest, back or on the soles of your feet. Inhale deeply.

Would also make an amazing diffuser blend! Just sayin'!

DIY Bottom Balm

lesley graham

DIY Bottom Balm

This is a favorite for little bottoms or any skin that needs some soothing! A great substitution for Tender Tush if it is ever out of stock.

You will need:

Melt beeswax in a double boiler (or a glass bowl set over a pot of simmering water). Once melted, add the coconut oil and the shea butter and allow all to melt completely. Once melted, remove from stove and allow to cool a bit until no longer translucent. Add in the essential oils and whip it all up with a hand mixer until nice and fluffy. Transfer to a 4-ounce glass jar.

DIY Outdoor Spray

ashley cribb

With warmer weather (and summer vacations!) right around the corner, we are prepping for safe fun in the sun! One of our favorite oily DIYs is an Outdoor Spray. Chemical free, effective and smells great? Sign us up!

To make your Outdoor Spray, grab a 4oz glass spray bottle and add:
4T alcohol-free Witch Hazel

 - 10 drops Citronella
 - 10 drops Geranium
 - 5 drops Lavender
 - 5 drops Purification
Optional: additional 5 drops Eucalyptus + 5 drops Peppermint
Fill with V-6 or fractionated coconut oil

Spray generously onto skin and rub in slightly to enjoy the outdoors annoyance-free! If you need a stronger spray, add more essential oils, up to a total of 50 drops!

You can also also add a few drops of citronella and/or purification to patio umbrellas, hammock and hammock swing, outdoor pillows, shoes and other absorptive materials around the outdoor spaces to stay annoyance-free!

Apply evenly through hair and leave on for 15-30 minutes before washing hair thoroughly.

Love this recipe from Young Living! - Casey Weigand

Travel Faves Beyond the Kit!

lesley graham

Once you start using oils and seeing the benefits, you won't be caught traveling without them! Here are a few of our must-have travel favorites outside of the kit (see how to travel with your kit here).

First, a cute pouch! We love this one but also love Modern Makerie and you can always find cute pouches on Etsy.

Keep hands + surfaces clean! Travel = germs. Ew. We cannot imagine life without Thieves spray (door handles, hands, cell phones, etc) and the hand purifier. They smell amazing and are safe for little ones. We also love to travel with Thieves Cough Drops.

Not the DIY type? We adore Young Living's roll ons! First of all... PRETTY, second these are powerful and AMAZING blends: Tranquil for getting some good rest while traveling (or just zenning out), Deep Relief for rolling on after a long day of sight seeing and Breathe Again... for obvious reasons!

The Orb diffuser doesn't spill and it's small and fits in a cup holder. We love it for long car rides and for tucking it in our overnight bag. It's also great for kid rooms!

Other blends we love to have on hand: Peace and Calming, Release (fear of flying anyone?!) and Aroma Siez (great for unwinding - smells amazing).

Need energy on the go? We love Ningxia Red for immune support and antioxidants, Nitro for natural energy, the BEST granola EVER and Master Formal for everything you need in handy travel packets.

Travel with your Kit!

lesley graham

New to oils? Here are some ways to travel with your kit. Let's get started.

Can I fly with my oils? 100% YES! We like to carry them on to apply during the flight (ahhh!) and make sure your tops are screwed on tight. Flying internationally? Place them in a clear ziplock bag.

Make sure to pack your diffuser (we also LOVE the Orb diffuser for travel - spill-proof and doesn't take up much room)! Here are some of our favorite starter kit blends.

In a glass water bottle (how cute is this one?!) stay hydrated and refreshed with a drop of Lemon or Peppermint. Something not sitting right? Add a drop of Digize to Peppermint (more about these oils here).

Make a Thieves roller for immune boosting super powers! Use consistently on the bottoms of your feet before travel and all during. If you start to feel yucky roll down the spine as well.

Thieves Roller

Fill roller ball 1/4 of the way with Thieves oil and then top with carrier oil! More rollers with your kit here. We recommend the Head On roller for flights and Tummy Calmer to have on hand! The Breathe Easy is also a favorite.

Make an after-sun spray with Lavender, Peppermint and Copaiba.

You will need:

+ ½ cup witch hazel or water
+ 2 Tablespoons pure aloe vera gel
+ 10 drops pure Lavender
+ 10 drops pure Peppermint
+ 5 drops Copaiba
+ 4 oz (or larger) spray bottle

Combine all ingredients and shake! Spray on for instant cooling and healing.

Motion Sickness? We love to diffuse Peppermint in the car, you can also place a few drops on a clothes pin and clip it to the vents!

Unicorn Roller

ashley cribb

Think of this as the mother of all emotional rollers... calming, supporting, uplifting... ALL IN ONE. This powerhouse combination from our sweet friend Casey Wiegand contains so many of our favorite for all the feels!

Amazing emotional support, smells so dreamy and makes a great perfume! Apply frequently and liberally ;) We love rolling this blend onto the wrists, along the neck and onto the chest.

Oils are the perfect way to support all the feels because our brains are naturally wired to connect smell with emotions and memories. Breathe in deeply and repeat some positive statements such as "I am enough" or "My way is clear" or "I honor myself."

Plus you'll have people telling you 'Girl, you smell good!' Other great combinations for mood here

Essential Oils by Mood

lesley graham

photo-1497433550656-7fb185be365e.jpeg

Think of this as the mood ring of diffusing ;). You can also wear these topically.

Essential oils work with the limbic system of the brain, also known as the "smell brain."

There are over 50,000,000 receptor neurons located in the limbic system which send a message to the olfactory bulb. These neurons were created to react to the smells and then send a message which is produced after the scent is detected and then it is used to communicate with areas of the brain that deal with our emotions, basic thought processes and behaviors.

Our sense of smell can even trigger childhood memories which shows us the power of our senses and how they can be used for our overall well being.

Mood//

Confidence - Cypress, Fennel, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Orange, Pine

Productivity - Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary

Peace - Roman Chamomile, Frankincense, Juniper, Tranquil, Peace and Calming

Happiness - Joy, Orange, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Geranium

Positivity - Basil, Lemon, Grapefruit, Frankincense, Geranium

What are HOT oils?!

lesley graham

Hot oils are essential oils that are warming to the skin and should always be used with a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation. Some examples of hot oils are: Thieves, Cinnamon Bark, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme and for some people, Peppermint.

What happens if I forget and then experience an uncomfortable warming? What if my little ones accidentally touch them? What if they get in my eyes? The answer is always to apply a carrier oil immediately. Oil + water do not mix so if you apply a carrier oil to the area it will immediately provide relief. :)

Some of our favorite carrier oils: Young Living's V6, coconut oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil.

More oil safety tips on Young Living's blog.

Lemongrass for Skin

lesley graham

IMG_0288.jpg

Lemongrass is an incredible oil. It is mood boosting, great for sore muscles (it's a hot oil so make sure to use a carrier oil like Young Living's V6 or coconut oil), also wonderful for diffusing for respiratory support. Lemongrass is an amazing oil for your immune system and also for supporting lactation or making your own deodorant!

From Eat Beautiful:

Lemongrass for troubled skin

  • 5-10 drops Lemongrass essential oil
  • 1 cup carrier oil

Combine ingredients and stir or shake (we recommend using a pump bottle like this for easy application) and use as a skin cleanser for troubled skin.
